Abbots Leigh, Bristol. Indian sandstone cobbled pathway

Further to the walling works completed at this property in Abbots Leigh in 2013, Incastone were asked to return and build a curved Indian sandstone cobbled pathway through two large planting beds in the rear garden.

The cobbles were sourced locally and complimented the current Indian sandstone paving on-site. They also matched with the recently built boundary wall.

The pathway had a slight camber to it, so we firstly built the spine and then slightly dropped the cobbles either side of this along its length. The cobbles were mortared in with a semi dry mix of holme sand, stone dust and cement and pointed with a hydraulic lime and chardstock sand buff pointing mix to match the existing boundary wall.

The pathway snaked through the planting beds to a length of 16m and also edged the beds as they curved round onto the lawn.

We built over 30m of dry stone retaining walling along the face of the raised planting beds where it meets the lower lawn and incorporated steps and a sun terrace into the design.

The walling stone used is known as Brecon mixed and comes in shades of green and red, when laid together in a random pattern it looks great.

Dry stone walling offers a great habitat to wildlife and this was one of the main reasons the client requested its use.

future works discussed include a fire pit, a monolith, lighting and further cobbled paving.
